Research interests
ICU Outcomes after Acute Lung Injury/ARDS

We have completed the first in-person multidisciplinary 5-year follow-up program for Survivors of the Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). To date, our group has published comprehensive 1, 2 and 5-year outcome studies in survivors of ARDS. N Engl J Med 2003; 348:683-93,  Am J Resp Crit Care Med 2006; 174:538-44, N Engl J Med 2011; 364:1293-304.

We have completed a multidisciplinary 1-year follow-up program for Survivors of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). Our group completed one-year follow-up on the largest cohort of SARS patients internationally and the only evaluation of healthcare utilization and caregiver burden. This project was modeled after our ARDS outcomes work and was part of Cathy Tansey’s Doctoral project (now completed).Arch Int Med 2007;167:1312-1320.

ICU Outcomes and Rehabilitation for Survivors of Prolonged Mechanical Ventilation (≥ 1 week) and their family Caregivers

The RECOVER program (Co- PI Jill Cameron PhD)- a multidisciplinary and family-centred intervention for Rehabilitation and reCOVERy in survivors of critical illness. The development of this intervention has been informed, in part, by our outcomes work in survivors of ARDS/SARS and will be further informed by evaluation of outcomes and a prospective needs assessment, part of the Towards RECOVER multi-centre prospective cohort study of outcomes in ICU patients mechanically ventilated for at least one week and their caregivers- currently ongoing. The Towards RECOVER cohort study- the first phase of our 4-phase RECOVER program of research- began in 2009 and has received 4-year funding from CIHR and the Ministry of Health.
