Dr Mark Duffett is a pharmacist and research methodologist at McMaster Children’s Hospital and the Department of Pediatrics at McMaster University.

Dr Duffett's clinical and methodological research programs are focused on improving the outcomes of critically ill children and their families.

His clinical research focuses on reducing iatrogenic complications and improving the recovery of children from critical illness. This includes reducing nosocomial infections and gastrointestinal bleeding (though the rational use of stress ulcer prophylaxis) and improving recovery after critical illness (through improved sedation strategies). Dr Duffett is the principal investigator of the PIC-UP Pilot Trial. This is a CIHR-funded multicentre pilot trial of stress ulcer prophylaxis in critically ill children underway in 6 Canadian centres.

His methodological research focuses on how to improve the research enterprise in pediatric critical care (in particular randomized controlled trials). This program includes an ongoing scoping review with methodological sub-studies, survey, social network analysis and qualitative study. Dr Duffett is the principal investigator for PICUtrials.net, a database of published RCTs in pediatric critical care.
