Michael Christian

Major Mike Christian is a specialist medical officer in the Canadian Forces and a consultant physician in Critical Care and Infectious Diseases at Mount Sinai Hospital and the University Health Network.

Having practiced as a general internist with a unique combination of interests in HIV and Critical Care, Mike was prompted to undertake fellowships in Critical Care and Infectious Diseases at McMaster University due to his experiences with SARS in Toronto. During the SARS outbreak Mike was involved on the ‘front lines’ of SARS as a clinician on the SARS unit at Toronto General Hospital and also as an investigator working with the Health Canada/CDC investigation task force at North York General Hospital.

Mike completed a MSc in Public Health in England at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Mike’s academic pursuits focus on disaster/outbreak management and emergency preparedness. He lead an Ontario working group which developed the first critical care triage protocol for use in a pandemic. He is on the Executive committee of the American College of Chest Physician’s Critical Care Task force on Mass Casualty Critical Care in addition to other international task forces. Mike serves on the Critical Care Medicine examination board for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Mike was on the task force that developed the Ontario Agency for Health Promotion and Protection, and served as a director on its founding board.

Mike is a CIHR funded principal investigator as well as Chair of the steering committee for the PREEDICCT study group. He has published 47 peer-reviewed papers in journals including: New England Journal of Medicine; Canadian Medical Association Journal; Clinical Infectious Diseases; Emerging Infectious Diseases; CHEST; Disaster Medicine & Public Health Preparedness; and Canadian Journal of Emergency Medicine. In addition, he has authored chapters on triage, bio-event disasters and pandemic planning for several text books.

Mike serves as a Global Advisor on the Editorial Board of Disaster Medicine & Public Health Preparedness as well as sitting on the Editorial Board of the Emerging Health Threats Journal in addition to being a reviewer for numerous journals.
