Sean Bagshaw

Dr. Bagshaw is a Staff Intensivist, Clinician Scientist, and Associate Professor in the Department of Critical Care Medicine, University of Alberta

Dr. Bagshaw is a Staff Intensivist, Clinician Scientist, and Associate Professor in the Department of Critical Care Medicine, University of Alberta. Dr. Bagshaw is currently the Director of Research and Innovation and the Interim Chair of the Department of Critical Care Medicine, University of Alberta.
Dr. Bagshaw received his medical doctorate at the University of Calgary. He completed Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada specialty training in Internal Medicine, in Critical Care Medicine and completed a Masters of Science in Epidemiology in the Department of Community Health Sciences, University of Calgary.
Dr. Bagshaw completed a clinical and research fellowship in Critical Care Medicine/Critical Care Nephrology at the Austin Hospital, in Melbourne Australia (2005-2007).
Dr. Bagshaw joined the Department of Critical Care Medicine, University of Alberta as a Staff Intensivist and Assistant Professor in April 2007.
Dr. Bagshaw provides full time clinical care to critically ill patients in two of the largest intensive care units (ICU) in Alberta: General Systems ICU at the University of Alberta Hospital and Cardiovascular Surgical ICU at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute.
Dr. Bagshaw is further supported by a Clinical Investigator Award from Alberta Innovates – Health Solutions (2008-2015) and a Canada Research Chair in Critical Care Nephrology (Tier 2). He has research expertise in epidemiology, clinical trials and health services research. His research focuses on health outcome evaluation, ICU organization and capacity, acute kidney injury, technological organ support, and critical illness in vulnerable populations (e.g., elderly, frail).
He has published over 300 peer-reviewed papers (h-index 56) and has received over $34 million in research funding support. Dr. Bagshaw is on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Critical Care Trials Group.
